Maribel Vinson Owen / by Molly Schiot

Nine-time U.S. Olympic figure skating champion and member of the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. After retiring from competition, Owen enjoyed a successful career as a coach for the American figure skating team. At the 1961 U.S. National Championships, both of Owen's daughters won gold -  21 year old namesake Maribel in pairs and 16 year old Laurence in ladies' singles. Tragically, all three Owen women perished the following month, when a plane carrying all eighteen members of the U.S. figure skating team crashed en route to the World Championships in Prague. The USFS Memorial Fund, created following the crash, has since granted over $10M to young figure skaters across the country, including Michelle Kwan.
