ENRIQUETA BASILIO / by Molly Schiot

Basilio was a Mexican track and field athlete who competed in several disciplines. Although she failed to medal at the '68 Olympics in her home country, one of the most enduring images of the Games is that of 20 year old Basilio running into the stadium and lighting the Olympic cauldron.  In doing so, she became the first female in Olympic history to hold the honour.
