Under intense pressure and facing death threats from Islamist radicals, Boulmerka became the first Algerian woman to win an Olympic title at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. In the lead up to the Olympics, Boulmerka was forced to train in Berlin due to the militant uprising in Algeria: "It was too risky. I could have been killed at any moment". Boulmerka later served on the Athlete's Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
